Emissions in Biogas and
Renewable Energy Production

Biogas plants, biomass combustion units, and other renewable energy facilities
contribute to air emissions through processes such as fermentation, combustion,
and gas upgrading. These emissions often contain:

Why Treatment is Necessary

Methane is over 25 times more potent than CO₂ in terms of global warming potential. Reducing fugitive emissions is key to truly “green” energy.

EU and international standards now set strict limits on methane slip, odor nuisance, and acid gas emissions from renewables production plants.

Biogas plants are often located near agricultural or rural zones. Uncontrolled odors can damage public acceptance and lead to complaints or shutdowns.

Gases like H₂S and NH₃ are toxic at even low concentrations and require continuous monitoring and treatment to protect workers and surrounding areas.

Flare losses, unfiltered biogas, or untreated emissions can result in lost energy potential or reduced efficiency in CHP and upgrading systems.

Possible emission treatment technologies

BM Process offers customized emission control solutions for renewable energy and biogas operations:

Biological or Chemical Scrubbers

Efficiently remove hydrogen sulfide (H₂S), ammonia, and VOCs using water-based or chemical absorption systems.

Thermal Oxidizers (RTO)

Destroy methane and VOCs through controlled high-temperature combustion with low environmental impact.

Activated Carbon Filters

Polish residual VOCs, siloxanes, or odors from biogas streams before use in engines or upgrading units.

Enclosed Flares & Safety Combustion Units

Ensure safe disposal of excess biogas or methane slip with minimal visibility and controlled emissions.

Heat Recovery Integration

Reuse waste heat from oxidizers or CHP units to optimize energy balance across the plant.

Integrated Engineering &
Emission Control Expertise

At BM Process, we combine in-depth knowledge of emission abatement technologies with full-scope engineering services—process, piping, mechanical, electrical & instrumentation (E&I), and automation.

Whether you need a targeted emission control retrofit or a full plant upgrade, we work from concept to commissioning. Our holistic approach ensures optimal integration with your existing systems while minimizing operational costs and external energy dependence.
