Adhesives, Coating and
Surface Treatment
Production of solvent-based adhesives and coating products as well as their application on surfaces.
Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) are carbon-based chemicals that easily evaporate at room temperature.
In the adhesive and coating industries, VOCs are typically emitted from:
- • Solvents used in formulations
- • Curing and drying processes
- • Cleaning agents and thinners
Why Emission Reduction Is Needed

VOCs react with nitrogen oxides (NOx) in the presence of sunlight to form ground-level ozone (smog), which is harmful to ecosystems, vegetation, and air quality.

Exposure to VOCs can cause eye, nose, and throat irritation, headaches, and more serious long-term effects like liver, kidney, or central nervous system damage. Some VOCs (e.g., benzene, formaldehyde) are known or suspected carcinogens.

Adhesive and coating plants are often subject to strict air quality regulations (e.g. the new EU legislation). Non-compliance can lead to fines, shutdowns, or loss of permits.

VOCs often have strong odors that can lead to community complaints and reputational damage.

Maintaining low VOC levels is essential for occupational health and ensuring explosion safety within manufacturing facilities.
Emission control solutions
Treatment of VOC emissions in the surface treatment, coating and adhesive manufacturing industry is possible in several ways.
Thermal oxidizers (RTO / Catox / recuperative oxidizer)
Activated carbon adsorption
Biofilters
Condensation or scrubbing systems
Process changes (e.g., water-based or solvent-free adhesives/coatings)
